1. Why is the Giant called selfish?

Answer- The Giant was called selfish because he didn’t allow children to play in his garden. He built a tall wall around it and posted a notice saying that trespassers would be punished.

What are they referring to in both the cases?

Answer- In the first situation, the kids were happy playing in the Giant’s garden every day after school, having a great time.

Answer- (i) In the story, Winter represents a sad and gloomy time in the garden. It’s a season of coldness and barrenness, where nothing grows or blossoms. The trees droop, and the birds stay silent. Because the children stopped playing in the garden, Spring didn’t come there, and the garden remained stuck in Winter, without any signs of life or joy.

(ii) When Spring arrived everywhere else, the trees bloomed, and the birds sang, but not in the Giant’s garden where Winter still lingered. Without the children playing there, the garden remained cold and lifeless. One day, a lovely flower appeared, but upon seeing the notice-board, it retreated sadly into the ground. Winter was pleased with this and covered the garden in snow and frost. The North Wind blew fiercely, and Hail pelted the castle roof, causing damage. Hail, dressed in grey, raced around the garden, his breath chilling everything it touched.

4. Was the Giant happy or sad over the state of the garden?

Answer- The Giant felt very sad about his garden. His garden was always filled with Snow, Frost, North Wind, and Hail. He wondered why Spring was taking so long to come to his garden.

5. What effect did the linnet’s song have over Hail and the North Wind?

Answer- The linnet’s song made the Hail stop dancing over the head. Likewise, the North Wind stopped roaring.

When the children filled the garden, the trees became delighted and blossomed beautifully. The Giant was amazed to see this lovely scene, with birds chirping happily and flowers blooming with joy.

(ii) The Giant understood that Spring didn’t come to his garden on time because he didn’t let the children play there. He realized he had been selfish by putting up a high wall to stop the children from entering the garden.

In response, the child smiled and told him that because the Giant had once allowed him to play in the garden, he would one day take him to his own garden, which was like paradise.

To maintain it, I’d water the plants, remove weeds, and ensure enough sunlight. I’d also plant various flowers and trees to attract birds and butterflies, and keep it clean.
