1. What did Hafeez Contractor have nightmares about?
Answer- Hafeez Contractor kept having nightmares about taking a math test where he did not know anything.
2. What did the Principal say to him, which influenced him deeply?
Answer- The Principal told Hafeez that his mom worked really hard to bring him up and always paid his school fees on time, even though his dad wasn’t there. The Principal said Hafeez was a good student and could get good grades if he put more effort into his studies. He encouraged Hafeez to rise to the occasion and concentrate on studying more. He also asked him to take a break from sports for a while. By hearing this, Hafeez was deeply influenced.
3. “… that year I did not step out onto the field.” What was he busy doing that year?
Answer- That year, Hafeez was influenced by the Principal’s words so much that he didn’t even go play sports, even though he was a champion and the team captain. Instead, he focused only on praying, eating, and studying. So, when he said, “I didn’t step out onto the field that year,” it means he just concentrated on studying.
4. (i) What “distraction” did Hafeez Contractor create one day?
(ii) Would you have liked to participate in the “distraction” had you been with him?
Answer- (i) One day, Hafeez didn’t feel like studying, so he created a disctraction in his class, and they ended up playing a game called ‘chor police’ for a whole hour.
(ii) I would have loved to join in the fun when Hafeez caused a distraction in class. Playing chor police with my friends for a whole hour would’ve been one of my best school memories. It’s important to remember that having fun and making memories with friends is just as important as studying.

Answer- Hafeez Contractor wanted to join the police force, but at his mother’s suggestion, he opted to pursue a college education instead. As a result, he took admission at Jaihind College in Bombay.
2. In the architect’s office, Hafeez Contractor was advised to drop everything and join architecture. Why?
Answer- It all happened unexpectedly. One day, Hafeez noticed someone drawing a window design incorrectly. Although window detail is a very advanced drawing and Hafeez was not an architect, yet he pointed out the mistake, saying the window wouldn’t open properly. It turned out he was correct. His cousin’s husband, amazed by his observation, asked him to design a house. After seeing his talent, he advised Hafeez to drop everything and join architecture.
3. (i) What was Mrs Gupta’s advice to Hafeez Contractor?
(ii) What made her advise him so?
Answer- (i) Mrs. Gupta was one of Hafeez’s teachers when he was in second or third grade. She noticed his lovely drawings in school. She told him that he should become an architect when he grows up.
(ii) When Mrs. Gupta saw Hafeez’s sketches in school, she said that even though he wasn’t great at other things, his drawings were really good. That’s why she suggested him to become an architect.
4. How did he help fellow students who had lost a button?
Answer- When his classmates lost a button while playing or fighting, they would often rush to him for help. He would help them by cutting a button from chalk using a regular blade.
5. Which rules did he break as a school boy?
Answer- Hafeez often broke rules that got in the way of what he wanted. He spent a lot of time playing and playing pranks on others. If he didn’t feel like studying, he’d make a distraction like playing chor-police. During tests, he’d copy from others.
6. (i) What is Hafeez Contractor’s definition of mathematics?
(ii) How would you want to define mathematics? Do you like the subject?
Answer- (i) According to Hafeez Contractor, the definition of mathematics is “Putting design, construction, psychology and sociology together and making a sketch from all that is ‘mathematics’”.
(ii) Mathematics is like a puzzle where you use numbers and symbols to solve problems and understand patterns. I do like the subject; it’s fascinating how it helps us understand the world around us in a precise and logical way.

Everyone has their own path to success, and it’s essential to recognize and nurture diverse forms of intelligence and creativity.
