1. When he felt the earthquake, do you think Ignesious immediately worried about a tsunami? Give reasons for your answer. Which sentence in the text tells you that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck?
Answer– When Ignesious felt the earthquake, he wasn’t concerned about a tsunami. He took his television and put it on the ground to keep it from falling. He thought it was just a regular earthquake. His family ran out of the house. After the shaking stopped, they noticed the sea starting to rise. This supports the idea that they didn’t have time to talk or make plans.
2. Which words in the list below describe Sanjeev, in your opinion?

3. How are Meghna and Almas’s stories similar?
Answer– Both Almas and Meghna were the sole survivors in their families after being swept away by the tsunami waves. They drifted in the sea for several days. Meghna spent two days floating on a wooden door and was braught to the show by a wave.
Similarly, Almas clung to a log of wood and lost consciousness. She later woke up in a hospital in Kamorta and was then taken to Port Blair. Both girls were deeply traumatized by the experience.
4. What are the different ways in which Tilly’s parents could have reacted to her behaviour? What would you have done if you were in their place?
Answer– Tilly’s parents could have responded to her behavior in different ways. They might have ignored her because she was just a ten-year-old girl, or they could have scolded her for screaming too much.
If I were in their place, I would have taken Tilly’s concerns seriously and taken steps to prepare for the impending disaster.
5. If Tilly’s award was to be shared, who do you think she should share it with her parents or her geography teacher?
Answer– I think Tilly should share her award with her geography teacher. The teacher taught her about tsunamis and how they can be dangerous. Because of this knowledge, Tilly was able to save many lives.
6. What are the two different ideas about why so few animals were killed in the tsunami? Which idea do you find more believable?
Answer– There are two different ideas about why so few animals were killed in the tsunami. One idea suggests that animals have a sixth sense that allows them to detect natural disasters and flee to safety beforehand. The other idea proposes that some experts think animals can hear or feel vibrations in the earth. They can sense a disaster coming long before humans do and move to safer places. Also animals are more agile and able to quickly climb to higher ground when they sense danger.
Personally, I find the second idea more believable. Animals have instincts that help them survive, and being agile allows them to react quickly to threats. Scientists have also shown that they can sense changes and hear low sounds that humans can’t.

1. Go through Part-I carefully, and make a list of as many words as you can find that indicate movement of different kinds. (There is one word that occurs
repeatedly — count how many times!) Put them into three categories.

This shows that there are fast movements in a tsunami, making it really hard to quickly escape the danger. The killer tsunami struck these islands five days ago. But the victims are being brought in even now. Each one has a story to tell. Today, I helped give out food, water, and medicine to those who need it most.
An elderly woman, clutching a tree as waves consumed her village, mourned her losses but vowed to rebuild. A young father, wading through swirling waters with his children on his shoulders, showed unwavering determination. Listening to their stories made me realize how brave ordinary people can be. Despite everything they’ve been through, they’re trying hard to make things normal again. Their bravery amidst adversity fills me with gratitude and hope, reminding me of the strength of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. Their courage and determination are amazing. I feel lucky to be able to help them, and I admire them a lot.
2. The story shows how a little girl saved the lives of many tourists when a tsunami struck the beach, thanks to the geography lesson that she had learnt at school. She remembered the visuals of a tsunami and warned her parents.
Do you remember any incident when something that you learnt in the classroom helped you in some way outside the classroom?

Answer– One day, while I was home alone, I noticed a flicker of flames coming from the kitchen of the house next door. Remembering the fire safety protocols taught in school, I immediately called the fire department and informed them about the situation. Then, recalling the importance of not attempting to extinguish a large fire alone, I hurriedly evacuated my own house and alerted my neighbors to do the same. Once outside, I ensured everyone was at a safe distance from the burning house and waited for the firefighters to arrive. Thanks to the fire safety lessons learned in school, I was able to respond quickly and help ensure the safety of my neighbors and myself.
